Pet Shop Investigations

There are around 2,300 pet shops in the UK licensed to sell live animals. Whilst these shops are inspected by the local authority and have licensing regulations they legally must meet, it is unfortunately still common to find licensing breaches and animals suffering in these shops due to improper care. The licensing regulations are often not properly enforced, as there are not the proper resources available to the local authority or any unbiased governing body to do so.

As members of the public and customers of these shops, we are able to investigate and flag potential breaches ourselves. These shops are open to the public, meaning we are able to visit and assess the conditions of the animals inside. If we see any potential licensing breaches, we can gather evidence and report these breaches to the relevant authorities who can then hopefully take action.

Become an Investigator

Pet shop investigations are an accessible action that almost anyone can take part in!

To be an investigator, you will need a basic knowledge of animal care and pet shop licensing, a smartphone and the means to travel to your local pet shop. It can be more comfortable doing investigations with a friend, but it is also possible by yourself.
